Watercolor Portrait of Stu Raleigh NC

April 5, 2020 / 14x11 watercolor / Raleigh Portrait Artist

This is a watercolor portrait of my brother Stu, who lives in Wake Forest NC. I almost didn’t post this painting because, I didn’t like it at first. I don’t always like the work I’m doing, and sometimes that has nothing to do with the painting and more to do with what my mood is at the moment and how tired I’m feeling at the end of the paint session...

Little Church, an Architectural Watercolor Raleigh NC

March 4, 2020 /14x11 watercolor / Raleigh Landscape Artist

OK, here is another image I captured from my cousin Janette's FB photos. Janette posted this one back in 2013, but didn't mention where this church was located. NC has thousands of churches of all sizes and shapes, 15 churches, right here in Louisburg...

Watercolor Landscape in Wake Forest NC

February 29, 2020 /10x8 watercolor / Raleigh Portrait Artist

Living in North Carolina means I don’t have to travel too far to find a beautiful landscape to paint. I see this beautiful little pond every time I drive to my brother’s house in Wake Forest. Watercolors are great for landscapes, and I enjoyed painting this pond...

Bruiser, Watercolor Pet Portrait

February 29, 2020 /8x10 watercolor

In my previous post, I mentioned how busy I was with a new puppy. Well, here he is. My brother who lives in Wake Forest, Wake County has two English Creams. English Creams, is what you call the white version of the Golden Retriever bread. Bruiser is a pretty large puppy, who will grow into a large dog, no doubt...

Watercolor Landscape Back Yard

February 16, 2020 /10x8 watercolor

With a new puppy keeping me busy, I wasn't sure I was going to squeeze in any painting time, but I managed to do so. This is a view of my back yard. I did an oil painting of that same tree, this past summer. It was the strong light and shadows that attracted me to this scene...

Keiko

February 2, 2020 /8x10 watercolor

Thank God for the weekends! Had a busy week and didn't get to paint until today. My portraits continue to be on the rough side, but I'll celebrate anyway as I was able to capture the likeness of my granddaughter. The lighting in the image was not to my liking, but the pose was perfect. Gotta make do with what you have for the moment.

Watercolor Portrait of Travis

January 19, 2020 /8x10 watercolor

I thought it was time to attempt a portrait in watercolors. Travis is my great nephew and once again I captured the reference image from my family's  FaceBook page. There are tons of mistakes in this painting but I'm posting it anyway because I was able to capture a likeness of Travis, that was my first goal...

Fresh Snow

January 17, 2020 /12x9 watercolor

For my next watercolor painting, I wanted to work on a snowscape.  It’s all about getting in some more practice time. From another YouTube tutorial favorite, Yong Chen, this snow scene really caught my eye. I captured the reference  image from a tutorial he was working on and just created my own version...

The Nubble Lighthouse

January 16, 2020 /10x8 watercolor

One of the most famous locations to visit, photograph, and paint, is the Nubble Lighthouse located in York Maine. It’s almost a standard for north east artist to paint this iconic scene. The resource image I used came from my good friend Linda Avery. Linda lives in New Hampshire so a visit to the Nubble Lighthouse is just a hop, skip and a jump away. She took some beautiful images during her visit and posted them on Facebook...

The Hideaway

January 14, 2020 /12x9 watercolor

In North Carolina, there are no excuses for not finding great locations and landscapes to paint. The drive between Louisburg and Wake Forest, where my brother lives, are dozens of beautiful spots where I could stop, park, and start painting. The Hideaway is one such spot full of character...

Jessie

January 2, 2020 /8x10 watercolor

First watercolor for the new year! My beautiful Jessy! You can go back and look at an earlier attempt to paint Jessy's portrait and see the growth I'm having as I continue to paint. This of course is a watercolor and what thrills me is how I'm now making the connection to watercolor painting. Being a very detailed oriented oil painter, learning to paint loose has been a real issue for me.

Janette's Winter

December 16, 2019 /10x8 watercolor

This watercolor was inspired by my cousin Janette, who had posted images on her FaceBook account of a snow scene in Stonington Connecticut. I loved the softness of the scene and used it to paint this watercolor landscape...

Mississippi River

December 14, 2019 /10x8 watercolor

I had a chance to visit my brother Steve in Minnesota this past September. During the week, Steve drove me around the Rochester area to see some of the sights. On one of those days we had a pleasant drive along the Mississippi River. My brother stopped to give me an opportunity to shoot a few images. I took a picture of an interesting sight with hopes of working on a painting at a later date. There was nothing special about this site, just thought it was pretty. I call this one, Mississippi River.

Pauper

December 13, 2019 /8x10 watercolor

Pauper is my brother Stu and sister-in-law Margaret, from Wake Forest, NC. They recently lost their beautiful sweet golden retriever from old age. Pauper, was such a beloved dog and loved by everyone who came into contact with him. I decided to paint a watercolor pet portrait of Pauper, and make it a great Christmas gift for Margaret and Stu.

Three Birch Trees

December 8, 2019 /10x8 watercolor

Better late than never. I went Christmas shopping in Raleigh for my granddaughter, and was purchasing a set of watercolors for her when I suddenly got excited about the whole process. I had painted in watercolors back in the 80's and enjoyed my time working on watercolor projects.
I purchased a second set of watercolors for myself and reignited the creative juices. This is my warm up painting, a copy of a watercolor I saw on line by Susie Short....
